My AC86U runs Linux kernel 4.1.27 with Merlin 384.7 installed. I just tested wireguard (an old version from 10 Sept) and it was easy to install and get up running. It blows OpenVPN out of the water. The AC86U is a dual-core 1.8GHz beast and wireguard can utilize both cores (OpenVPN is only single-threaded).
